Double Social Security payments in 2025: the calendar is now official and it’s good news for retirees

With the New Year approaching, it is critical for those who receive Social Security benefits, which the Social Security Administration (SSA) administers through five programs, to know when they will get them.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers retirement, family, survivor, disability, and supplemental security income (SSI) payments throughout the year, and because they are so important to recipients, it releases a calendar with all scheduled benefits in advance so that beneficiaries know when to expect a payment and never miss one.

SSI payments are made on the first of each month, unless it is a weekend or a national holiday, in which case they are moved to the preceding day when banks are open and payment may be delivered. This is why you may receive two payments in one month but none in another. This does not entail any further payments. SSI will follow this schedule:

  • December 31, 2024: January 2025 payment
  • January 31, 2025: February 2025 payment
  • February 28, 2025: March 2025 payment
  • April 1, 2025: April 2025 payment
  • May 1, 2025: May 2025 payment
  • May 30, 2025: June 2025 payment
  • July 1, 2025: July 2025 payment
  • August 1, 2025: August 2025 payment
  • August 30, 2025: September 2025 payment
  • October 1, 2025: October 2025 payment
  • October 31, 2025: November 2025 payment
  • December 1, 2025: December 2025 payment
  • December 31, 2025: January 2026 payment

Retirement, family, survivor, and disability payments are distributed on the same days, with the timing governed by two criteria. The first determines whether they began claiming benefits before or after May 1997, and the second is their birth date.

Individuals who started earlier usually have their payment date on the third of the month, with the exception of two weekends: Friday, May 2nd and Friday, August 1st, due to scheduling conflicts.

The remaining payments are birth date dependent and follow this rule: recipients with birthdays on the 1st-10th of the month will receive their benefits on the second Wednesday of each month, those born on the 11th-20th will receive payouts on the third Wednesday, and those born on the 21st-31st will receive payments on the fourth Wednesday.

If a payment falls on a national holiday, it will be moved to the preceding day when banks are open.
